Diggit said. "Tools? Check. Directions? Check. Gas? Check." "You've checked your list twice ," Stretch said. "Good planning makes for good working," Diggit said, looking up. "Okay ... ready!" "Good!" Dozer said. "Let's get building!" If we work quickly," Diggit said, "we'll get everything done." "Great!" they agreed. Dozer pushed a wall of dirt and limbs into a big pile. Diggit scooped up a clawful and emptied it into Tipper's bed. Diggit raised his claw high, ready to dig in for another bucket of dirt ... then froze . There, right below him, as teeny as tiny, was a sleeping baby squirrel. "What are you looking at, Diggit?" Tipper said. "What's the holdup?" Dozer asked. Diggit shushed them and whispered, " He is." They all looked down at the tiny squirrel. "The poor thing," Stretch whispered. "He's so little ," Tipper said. Just then, the teensy squirrel half opened his eyes and sleepily walked over to Dozer's shovel and used it to scratch his back. Dozer rumbled a big laugh. "Comfy?" The squirrel spun around and said to Dozer's shovel, "I-I've never heard a wall talk before!" They all laughed. "A wall? There's more to me than that," Dozer said. "I'm Dozer." "I-I'm Earl. Earl the squirrel," he said, peering up at the big machines. "Are you lost?" Stretch asked. Earl looked around ... then sighed. "Very." "We'll help you," said Stretch. "We would help you," Diggit interrupted, "if we weren't so busy ." And then he dug down for another clawful of limbs. "Careful, little buddy," Diggit said. "We're working here." "Diggit!" Tipper said, mustering up the courage to speak. "That was not kind!" "Not kind at all," Stretch said. "But our list, our plan ...," Diggit said. "We have so much work to do." "What about God's plan?" Dozer asked. Diggit realized how unkind he had been. "Earl!" he shouted, rumbling over to where the little squirrel was sitting. "I'm sorry. I was not kind. You are more important than any list, and God tells us to be kind and help others," he said. "Will you forgive me?" Earl smiled and hopped over to hug Diggit. "Of course." Diggit lowered his claw. "Climb aboard," he said. "And hold on tight!" Diggit slowly lifted Earl as high as his arm could reach. "Can you see your house?" Earl looked in every direction, searching for the tree that looked like home. He jumped a little and pointed. "It's that way!" he shouted. (Continues...)
