Local Places/Global Regions: An Introduction to Global Geography through the Development Efforts of Heifer International offers an alternative approach to the traditional regional geography survey course. This site introduces students to key global regions and issues normally taught in regional geography through an exploration of Heifer International project case studies and family photos taken from the Peter Menzel and Faith D'Alusio's popular Hungry Planet. The site argues that global issues are best explored by understanding local problems and conditions. The site also describes local solutions to problems that plague the world. This site is ideal for professors interested in integrating service-learning into their lecture courses. Other site content includes a series of essays on social science thinking and a series of online assignments on place name geography, international news podcasts, Population Reference Bureau data, and Google Earth. Planned content for Fall 2010 includes seven case studies drawn from the work of other NGOs. The site author is amenable to input from potential adopters/collaborators and is willing to consult on the development of service-learning projects. Course royalties are donated to Heifer International and student scholarship funds. Site Author: Dorn Van Dommelen (PhD, Geography, University of Toronto) is a Professor of Geography at the University of Alaska Anchorage, trained as an historical geographer, he has dedicated the last few years to curricular development related to service-learning, international and environmental studies, working closely with colleagues at Heifer International.
