In 1861, the Revs. K. J. Pieters and J. R. Kreulen, both ministers in the Seceded Reformed Church in the Netherlands, published this study of the doctrine of infant baptism. In their preface, they explained that their purpose in writing this book was to answer the following question: "What is the true and pure doctrine of infant baptism, as it is contained in our confession and liturgy, in connection with the mode of thought of the Reformers and the time of its origin?" Here this work is being made available for the first time to English-speaking readers in its entirety. We have also included in this edition a series of articles that were originally published in the Reformed periodical De Bazuin between 1861 and 1865. In these articles, editorials, and letters to the editor, the issues discussed in this book are debated by Pieters, Prof. S. Van Velzen, and others. Together with the Translator's Introduction, these historical documents provide important contextual information which helps to explain why Pieters and Kreulen's work remains an important contribution to a debate that has long occupied Reformed theologians and believers.
