JOE is a war veteran haunted by the tragic death of his pal in the last days of WWII. Restless at the family farm in Iowa, he goes west to seek a new life. SUSAN is a young woman filled with romantic notions of love and marriage whose dreams have been shattered. She suddenly quits college and comes home to the family farm, to the consternation of her parents. Rice harvest on the farm is just starting.
