Crandle, a fictional character who thinks he is "a successful, well-adjusted, good looking thirteen-year-old man". In the book, Jeffrey shares his thoughts on how to become a man. The book is a series of goofy stories about "cool ideas" for any boy: fishing, figuring out how things work, negotiating for more allowance, clever ways to co-exist with a brother or sister, finding a hobby, keeping a sense of humor, and even sneaking one (or two) past your parents. Each story comes with both a "big mistake" and, equally important, a "lesson learned". The message, however, is much larger.  The journey to manhood has always been an interesting one for boys.
