Rose Then and Now Bible Map Atlas: With Biblical Background and Culture($35.37Value)

Description

Most Bible atlases only feature maps with very few explanations―which means they show where places are, but they don’t explain why they matter. Enjoy having an Atlas that not only includes over 120 maps, but also key background information! Rose Then and Now Bible Map Atlas with Biblical Background and Culture is the only Bible atlas with a combination of― 120 stunning detailed Bible maps. - Clear plastic overlays of modern cities and countries so you know where Bible places are today. - Incredible insights into the lives of 30 important Bible characters. This Bible atlas focuses on people―not regions―and how the Middle East geography affected their lives and decisions. You take studying the Bible seriously, which means you already know that understanding the Bible’s background and context is the only way to fully understand its meaning. But with dozens of cultures and cities mentioned in the Bible―what information is important to know? Maps include lines to show the direction people traveled, along with helpful notes. - Paul Wright’s text gives Bible references and shows how knowing the land of the Bible uncovers new details in the most beloved stories and people. - Learn how David’s clever understanding of geography and politics led to his marriage with Ahinoam of Jezreel. - Discover why Naomi, in the Book of Ruth, couldn’t just move back to Bethlehem after her husband’s death and use his land again. - Find out why Moses and the Children of Israel took the long southern trek from Egypt to the Promised Land, rather than the direct route. This is the only topical atlas available that offers all these features! The Rose Then and Now Bible Map Atlas gives you incredible insights into your favorite Bible stories. "In this integration of biography, history and geography, Paul Wright applies his considerable knowledge of the land to the life and times of people in both the Old and New Testaments. In his capable hands readers will see the characters of the Bible come to life in the context of the very real world in which they lived. Whether readers have been through the Bible fifty times or this is their first, the pictures, maps and extremely readable text will lead them to fresh insight into this greatest of stories." --Dr. John Walton, Professor of Old Testament, Wheaton College The Rose Then and Now Bible Map Atlas by Dr. Paul H. Wright is a tremendous new resource for students, pastors, and biblical scholars. As noted in the title, the atlas contains a well-known but under-appreciated feature, the integration of a clear modern- day overlay for the main maps. As many professors can attest, geography, even modern, is far from a strong suit of many students, and the integration of the ancient and modern map is definitely needed to help orient readers to where the biblical stories took place and how that connects with today s landscape. Beyond the expected features of any atlas clear, visually compelling maps, timelines, and site photos Wright s work displays a number of key strengths that flow from the unique combination of his educational background and his years of living in the land. First, the Atlas, shows a keen awareness of significant academic issues in the study of the land and brings those to light in a user-friendly way. The cautious comparisons of ancient pastoralists to traditional Bedouin is one prime example. Second, the work with its deep academic underpinnings in the modern study of history and culture, also displays a remarkably adept handling of the theological significance of the land in general and the setting of particular stories, as well as the literary use of geographical features in the various narratives of both the Old and New Testaments. Finally, it is clear from the photos, the comments on the sites, and the depth of knowledge that Wright s acquaintance with the land comes not just from decades of reading, but from years of living, studying, and teaching in the land. The first hand experience is evident on virtually every page. This is a book that I would highly recommend for anyone looking for help understanding the role of the physical setting of the Bible, the cultural milieu across the centuries it covers, and the unique literary usage of place in the narratives of the both the Old and New Testament. Wright is to be commended for producing such a clear, nuanced, and accurate text, and Rose should be thanked for making it available to us in such an attractive and helpful format. --J. Michael Thigpen, Executive Director of the Evangelical Theological Society Thigpen, Evangelical Theological Society (ETS) This is a terrific volume for reading the Bible and its cast of characters in context. The combination of text and illustration is wonderful. Among the chapters, I was particularly taken with the treatment of Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz, and the way that Wright was able to take these minor characters and assist readers in a fuller grasp of a classic tale.
