Description

In this book, readers will learn how local government is organized. Vibrant, full-color photos and carefully leveled text will engage young readers as they learn more about how the various roles and divisions in local government work together to ensure our cities and towns are run effectively. What exactly does the president do? Engaging text in a bold, colorful layout answers this and many other questions youngsters may have about the inner workings of the U.S. government. The three branches of national government are discussed, explaining their system of checks and balances. The duties of the president and various departments are also explained, as well as the functions of Congress and the Supreme Court. The processes of elections, voting, and lawmaking are slightly touched on. The similarities and differences of state and local government are also included, with discussion surrounding the services they provide to the public and how these services are funded. Though the information in each title is quite basic, the presentation excels; archival photos and paintings combined with stock art give the series a fun, pop art vibe. Thought-provoking questions are interspersed throughout to get kids engaged, and an activities section in the back matter inspires readers to get involved and take action. VERDICT Introductory information and a smart visual layout make this a solid purchase for the very young. --School Library Journal (10/26/2018)
