This biography of Poundmaker is a high-interest, low-vocabulary book for adolescents and adults with limited literacy skills. Poundmaker (1842-1886) was a Plains Cree chief known as a peacemaker and defender of his people. He negotiated for his people when the Government of Canada wanted them to move to reserves. Poundmaker led his people in The Northwest Rebellion on 1885, always hoping for a peaceful way to save his people from starvation. He turned himself in to the authorities when the Rebellion ended and was found guilty of treason. He was let out of prison a year later and died soon after a broken man.
