I was barely 18 years old when I heard the heart-rending screams of a penitent who cried out - “yoooooooooooo!” (me!), in the midst of a rainy night in a humble chapel in the suburbs of Naranjo, in the town of Comerío, Puerto Rico. It was the cry of a young man who had aged before his time due to an existential void inside him. That night was the beginning of a life of unselfish service to his new Lord and master. As the apostle Paul said, “for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ” (Philippians 3:8). This is the testimony that marks the beginning of a new mission for Angel Luis Garay, affectionately known as Gary. Gary is a working pastor in the truest sense of the word; without pretentions or delusions of greatness. Only one thing is of interest in this follower of Jesus Christ; to serve the people of God unselfishly. His ardent desire to live moved by one “sole passion” as stated by Miguel Limardo. All of this serves as reference for those who have a special zeal for the work of evangelism, a zeal that the world might believe the Good News of the Kingdom. In theology, we speak about the “human document” as ‘locus theologicus’ which means that our life could serve as the source for theological reflection. In that framework, the author is not looking for personal attention. He reminds us through his own life, that of the communities who have welcomed him and his wife Amparito, that God continues to speak. God keeps calling men and women. God keeps intercepting our path as a silent companion while at the same time allowing us feel the warmth of His presence. Gary was intercepted when he most needed a new direction in his life. As a result of divine grace, a new song was given to him, a new theme, and a new reason for living. To this day the melody still resonates in his soul: “I will sow for as long as I live”.
