In the nineteenth century European Scramble for Africa, Germany managed to grab only four colonies: Togoland, Cameroons, East Africa (Tanzania) and South West Africa. This book is a brief guide to the military aspects of the German occupation and colonization of South-West Africa, (present day Namibia). The intention is to succinctly but comprehensively narrate the wars the Germans fought, firstly against the native tribes in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and then against the Union of South Africa in the First World War until defeat and loss of the colony in 1915. The book also details the organisation and composition of the German Colonial army, the Native forces and that of the South African forces during these campaigns, including, in detail, the arms and equipment used. In addition, there are detailed chapters on two of the main battles of the period: the Battle of Waterberg, 1904, against the Herero tribes; and the Battle of Sandfontein, 1914, against South Africa in the First World War.
