Jesus taught His disciples, in Matthew 6:16, that " when ye fast ", we are to fast in secret, not as the hypocrites. But do Christians of this generation fast? Jesus did not say " if ye fast ", but when . In surveying many believers, pastors, & missionaries, I found an extreme minority who fasted regularly, & most had never heard a single sermon devoted to the subject. The Word of God contains over 70 references to fasting, not a major doctrine or discipline, but not an extinct or absent one either. The Lord gave an outline, to Isaiah the prophet (Is. 58:1-12), of 1) How not to fast 2) How to fast & 3) The Fruits of an acceptable fast. In this book, I use this biblical structure & draw in every biblical story, teaching & related subjects to fasting, to give a comprehensive biblical understanding to the discipline & practice of fasting. The book also concludes with practical advice that will both challenge & equip you to begin & break a biblical fast. My desire is to for believers to grow in their knowledge of the scriptures, & in their walk with the Lord. If fasting is a foreign subject to you, or if you desire to pass this along to your Church, Sunday School Class, or those you disciple, then you & I can be a part in the chain of successive teaching that Paul admonished Timothy to do in 2Tim. 2:1-2. May this study fulfill the goal of 'teaching', not only to impart knowledge, but that every reader will be a " doer of the work".
