Description

Fred, paterfamilias , proprietor of Narb's Saloon, is a slick operator purveying booze to poor clammers and fisherman who ply the Mississippi and Cannon Rivers to provide for their sustenance. Gretch is his wife, a gentile soul who is the moral glue of the family. They have two sons. Carl the older is a clone of his father in all respects and is his favorite. The younger son, George completely rejects the behavior and attitudes of his father and brother. They ridicule him for his poetry writing and gentlemanly habits. Thus, there is tension in the family particularly between George and his brother Carl. As we first meet the family, an historic drought is threatening their small community, Harlis Town, with extinction. The Narbs, the few remaining citizens of Harlis Town are forced to move to Red Wing, a few miles away to secure work. Suddenly the world is turned upside down with a deluge that causes flooding and the Narbs and many citizens flock to church to pray for Divine intervention. This experience causes a great change in Fred and son Carl. Life goes on and the Narb men find work at the Milwaukee railroad inspecting tracks. Forces of Nature intervene again in a disaster that changes all protagonists' lives... again.
