The Practice of the Presence of God: Being Conversations and Letters of Nicholas Herman of Lorraine($3.83Value)

Description

Brother Lawrence, born in 1611 in Lorraine, France, as Nicholas Herman, reveals to the world through his simple and hidden life as a Discalced (bare-footed) Carmelite how to practice a continual conversation with God. Whether during the tumult of everyday duties or in the silence dedicated to meditation and prayer, he did not deviate from his conversation with God; and if time passed in which he forgot Our Lord—through distraction, necessity, or negligence—he calmly rallied himself and continued in his exercise without disturbance. Within these pages, you will find his method for achieving this union, which consists only in the persistent application of the mind to God: directing all tasks to Him, thanking Him for the grace to perform them well, or begging His forgiveness when they are performed poorly—and dismissing all thoughts that do not lead to Him. In this way, Brother Lawrence was able to arrive at a deep spiritual union with God by living out all of the tasks required of him—from humble kitchen duties to errands outside the monastery—with a sereneness that garnered the attention of his fellow brothers, who in turn recorded some of his conversations and preserved his letters. It is simple enough to captivate the mind for one's entire life.
