I write this book to honor my Princess Warrior Wife Gabrielle's courageous life, her faith and love towards God, her love for me, her family and friends, and her resilience, strength, playfulness and creativity. Although my time with Gabrielle was short, it has powerfully impacted my life. I want to express my gratefulness to God, who brought Gabrielle into my life, and Gabrielle, who taught me what love looks like. I met my late wife, Gabrielle, in 2015, and we dated for three years before we married. One month before our wedding, she had a stroke, which was a long-term effect of the radiotherapy she’d had on her brain cancer diagnosed when she was a teenager. Within the six years of our marriage, we had lots of fun and laughs, but that time together also came with her health challenges. She had more strokes and related complications. A stroke in February 2023 was so debilitating that she could not stay at home and had to move to full-time care in a residential hospital. In April 2024, she passed away and went to heaven. I was devastated to lose my best friend and soul mate. When Gabrielle was in full-time care, I was in survival mode, trying to look after her, but the reality of losing her hit me like a ton of bricks after she passed away. I read her daily journals, looked at our photos, listened to her voice from her jazz music album, and watched our wedding video. I cried my heart out so many times and did not understand why this happened to us, and why Gabrielle had had to suffer that much. In the end, I found peace and discovered a deeper level of love for Gabrielle that I had never felt before. Gabrielle’s life means a lot to me, her family and her friends. When she was well, she always put us before her own needs. When she was sick, her love remained the same. While she was not always able to articulate or demonstrate her love while she was living at the care facility, she said to me many times, “I love you more!”. I am very grateful that our friends Jenny Hatch and Sarah Ashworth contributed content to this book. These included Gabrielle’s email and blog content, which I treasure. They will appear in the appendix.
