Being an old cop has a requirement that’s not written down. When new officers come out of the academy, they are assigned to older cops to show the younger ones how to use the things they learned in class. When that officer becomes a detective, they're in a whole new world and the boss will assign older detectives to show the new detectives short cuts and how to get information without waiting for it to come through the regular channels. The detectives who are counting their time to retirement call this “raising rookies”.
