It is also very convenient for professional musicians to work from the “Book”, as it is available in different editions to suit instruments: in B-flat, - E-flat, - C (or concert pitch): a group leader can announce the numbers of page, experienced players can read unfamiliar pieces at a glance. There were three editions of the Real Book. Volumes 1 and 2 are written by hand, the third is typed on the computer. Before the advent of the Internet it was difficult to find copies. The New Real Book, also in three volumes, published by Sher Music, and is more readable. The collection of songs differs from that of the original Real Book, but some songs are included there, in new transcriptions and with much better polygraphy. The "old" real book contains numerous errors (sometimes approximate grids, keys of "reference" recordings not respected, "accidents" - flat or sharp - forgotten, and imaginative attributions: for example, the composer of Journey to Recife n does not is Bill Evans, but the double bass player Richard L. Evans) and that the "New real books" offer more exact readings.
