Description

Book Description How to Train a Tracking Dog is a practical, no-nonsense training manual written by Ricky Perritt, a retired Sheriff’s Deputy from Santa Rosa County, Florida, with real-world experience training and working tracking dogs in law enforcement and search and rescue. This book is not theory. It is built from years of daily training, field work, and successful finds involving missing persons, endangered individuals, and fugitives who did not want to be found. Whether you are working with a Bloodhound, German Shepherd, or another capable tracking breed, this manual walks you step by step through the complete process of building a reliable tracking partner — from selecting the right puppy to running complex tracks in real environments. Inside this book you will learn: How to choose a puppy with strong natural scent drive - The difference between step tracking and scent tracking - Why Bloodhounds are proven scent trackers and how to train them correctly - Proper use of harnesses, leads, and collars — and why control must be clear - How to lay your first tracks and progress safely - Training on multiple terrains, turns, kinks, and crossings - How to fix problems using the correct voice and mindset - Why documentation and tracking logs matter — especially in court - Real stories from the field that show why trusting your dog matters This manual also includes sample tracking logs, diagrams, and training layouts, making it a true working guide — not just something to read once and put on a shelf. Above all, this book teaches one core principle: When the dog is hooked up and given the command, the dog is in charge. If you take your time, stay consistent, and do the work, you won’t just train a tracking dog — you’ll build a bond and partnership that lasts a lifetime
