1966 . . . . The 'N Betweens were a local pop group, based in Staffordshire. They had been known as The Vendors for a couple of years previously. The 'N Betweens released a couple of discs on the French Barclay label. They consisted of: John Howells - vocals, harmonica. Mick Marson - guitar. Dave 'Cass’ Jones - bass guitar. David Hill - guitar, Donald Powell - drums. Two other musicians would later join The 'N Betweens. Jim Lea had played a few shows with Nick And The Axemen. Noddy Holder had been a singer and guitarist with a band called Steve Brett And The Mavericks, who had put a few 45‘s out on the Columbia label. The pub and club scene in the mid-60’s was thriving and the 'beat boom’ spear-headed by the big and important groups like The Rolling Stones, the Beatles and so many others, was in full swing. Newspapers like the Wolverhampton Express & Star‘s daily Entertainment pages were just chock-full of small ads for beat groups like them most nights of the week. Not to mention all those other places where the group’s booking agent sent them to play. A far cry from today, with most of these FINE venues often re-purposed or demolished. You’d walk past them now and not realise what had occurred behind those doors. Their agents could boast about how busy their bands were. They worked their acts like dogs, out playing nearly every night of the week. Week-in, week-out. Adverts stated that groups were FABULOUS and AMAZING. It could be a decent living and, while some people said that beat groups were 'just a fad and would never last,’ the groups made hay while the sun shone.
