I AM MARIA: A stunning historical fiction Novel In the struggle between good and evil stands one woman. She must find the courage not just to survive the horrors of Nazi occupation and civil war but to fight back against them. From the idyllic island of Crete to war-ravaged Athens, to the collegiate city of Cambridge, her story is one of unthinkable cruelty, superhuman bravery, and ultimate triumph as she shouts defiance to the world with three simple words: I AM MARIA WHAT READERS ARE SAYING 5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I’ve read in ages. This book gripped me from the start and just kept getting better the more I read. I learned a lot about how hard life was during the war for Greeks, not only on Crete but Athens too. I always feel torn saying I enjoyed a book set during the war that covers atrocious acts but I couldn’t put this down. I’ve previously read and enjoyed Phillip Duke’s other novels so hopefully he will keep them coming. 5.0 out of 5 stars I am Maria: a pacy and thought provoking historical novel about the second world war in Crete. Phil Duke’s latest and highly readable novel is set mainly in Crete and demonstrates the deep affection he holds for that island and its history. The protagonist is Maria who in later life reveals to family an undisclosed past in wartime Crete. Her story is told from 1980s Cambridge a city I hold with affection. The book shines a light on, at least to me, a lesser-known theatre of war so it was an enlightening read and as with all good historical fiction the build-up to war, the war itself and the aftermath are depicted through well-developed characters. The plot moves along at pace and the moral dilemmas of all involved in conflicts through the ages are explored to good effect. Perfect anytime reading. 5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and uplifting... I have read many WW2 books but never one set in Crete and I knew nothing about the history of what happened in Greece after the war ended. Maria is a strong, courageous character who endures many of the horrors of war and occupation. This is a gripping story of one woman's fight for survival, when faced with the worst that humanity can imagine.
