Originally created by Joe Gill and Steve Ditko during the Silver Age of comic books, Captain Atom first appeared in Space Adventures #33 in 1960. After issue #42, in 1961, he took over Strange Suspense Stories, beginning with issue #75 in 1965. The magazine was then renamed “Captain Atom” beginning with issue #78. The series ran until issue #89 in 1967, when Charlton Comics filed for bankruptcy. Captain Allen Adam, a technician working on an experimental rocket, gained his abilities when he was seemingly “atomized” in an accident, then managed to reform himself as an atomic-powered being. He originally wore a red and yellow costume, which shielded people from his radiation. In issue #83, he was defeated, only to be reborn in a new form yet again in issue #84. The character lives on today in another incarnation published by DC Comics and was the inspiration for Doctor Manhattan in The Watchmen. This edition presents the original first issue of the Captain Atom comic book.
