This series reflects a long-standing concern that has shaped my life, as well as the lives of many Asian women. I do not want women to continue suffering under harmful cultural practices. We are living in the 21st century, and while change cannot happen overnight, I hope to deliver a clear message to those affected: this is not normal. It is harmful. It is a form of bullying. We widely reject bullying in all its forms—so we must also reject cultural practices that harm women. Male-dominated power structures, social control over women, and the treatment of women as second-class citizens are all forms of systemic oppression. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that countries such as Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have had women leaders, including prime ministers and presidents. Despite this progress, harmful practices still persist. Because this work addresses the theme of bullying, I felt compelled to bring attention to this issue through my series.
