The Way of Walking Alone The "Dokkōdō" (Japanese: 獨行道) ("The Path of Aloneness", "The Way to Go Forth Alone", or "The Way of Walking Alone") is a short work originally written by Miyamoto Musashi a week before he died in 1645. It consists of 21 precepts. Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary samurai, philosopher, and writer, died on June 13, 1645. This work mirrors that classic work by the legendary swordsman. The “Dokkōdō, is a text distilling Musashi’s philosophy and way of living into 21 precepts. The original manuscript survives to this day, and it remains as relevant as it was four centuries ago. What is offered here builds on this work and sage advice from the master swordsman within the context of martial combat and the Warrior Scholar Way of life. I offer comments to help direct your focus when training based on over 40 years of training and teaching the martial way and what I’ve learned in the military, but more importantly, from the things that I’ve learned from my master’s highlighted in the book Lessons From My Masters: A Chronicle of Martial Genius . The Dokkodo of the Shadow Fist is all about mindset and placing your mind in the proper frame. How we think about a thing and the context in which we understand it make all the difference in how we respond to a given situation and how we develop ourselves for battle. One more point: I offer this work with quotes from history because none of the things I describe are necessarily new or a secret. It’s only new if you haven’t heard them before or understood them in this context. The point is, people have been thinking about these matters for thousands of years, and far be it from me to arrogantly think I’m the first one ever to figure something out. It is my hope that this information serves you well...
