Three foci form the axis of this edition of Anglican Embers . The first is on the origins of the Anglican Use movement, both in Canada (with a memoir of sorts from Mgsr. Carl Reid), and as it originated from Rome with the Pontificate of Benedict XVI in a lecture from Fr. Aidan Nichols. The next focus is on Fr. Aidan Nichols’s After Newman: A Eulogy for Anglo-Catholics, 1845-1965 , with a series of reviews by six different authors (including Richard Upshar Smith, the inclusion of whose name KDP didn’t let me add). This symposium (sans alcohol) digs into Fr. Aidan’s work, taking the measure of his own measure of a movement that may have yet to run its full course. The last focus is on the 1559 Westminster Disputation, an event that gave the Elizabethan government cover to strip a number of bishops from their places in the House of Lords, and thus open the way for the Elizabethan Settlement, and the making of England into a Protestant country. Though not a focus, our editor-in-chief, Dr. Tighe, finishes with a Patrimonial Pearl on an English lawyer and cleric, seemingly ahead of his time in the love of the Catholic faith, though also havering between Catholicism and Orthodoxy.
