Munif Hussain, DO, MS, CAQSM is a member of Summit Health's Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team. Dr. Hussain is a board-certified sports medicine physician who provides treatment for all sports medicine and musculoskeletal disorders in patients of all ages and athletic ability-from the elite athlete to the person exercising for his or her own personal wellness. This includes treatment for any joint pain from arthritis, overuse disorders, upper and low back strains, trauma/fracture care, concussions, other non-sports related shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, thigh, knee, foot, and ankle concerns.
Dr. Hussain offers the most advanced care and up-to-date treatments available and performs state-of-the-art injections. He is able to use dynamic musculoskeletal ultrasound to precisely guide the needle without the use of radiation. Dr. Hussain says, "I utilize any methods possible to avoid surgery for patients including the selective use of various healing agents such as prolotherapy/sclerotherapy, platelet rich plasma (PRP), regenerative stem cell derivatives, hyaluronic acid (HA) as well as corticosteroids as indicated. For optimal patient outcomes, Dr. Hussain prescribes customized comprehensive physical therapy and rehabilitative programs for his patients collaborating closely with a reliable team of physicians and other musculoskeletal specialists, physical therapists, and orthopedic surgeons.
Early and accurate diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries or dysfunction is critically important to Dr. Hussain. "I truly enjoy helping folks get back on their feet rapidly and safely through proper diagnosis and the use of conservative, evidence-based management options when possible." He adds, "As an osteopathic clinician, I look at the entire patient. Being able to educate, motivate, and improve a patient's life, whether through treatment of an acute or chronic condition, is the ultimate reward."
Dr. Hussain has a strong appreciation for primary care sports medicine and is published in several research studies. His latest publication, involving primary care, hypertension, and body mass index, appeared in the June 2019 edition of The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. He has presented orthopedic clinical cases at the podium for the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (AOASM) conference and remains an active member. He is also an active member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM) where he has completed advanced level musculoskeletal ultrasound courses. In 2017, Dr. Hussain was appointed Teaching Associate in the clinical department of Emergency Medicine/Sports Medicine at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and taught musculoskeletal ultrasound of the upper and lower extremities. He has taught physicians at the medical student and resident level. He continues to stay involved in the alumni association at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York, NY, his alma mater.
Dr. Hussain is inspired by exercise medicine, strengthening/conditioning and is passionate about the body/mind relationship and its role in inspiring athletes. He's served as a sideline physician for ringside Olympic-style boxing with USA boxing, Muay Thai UFC Fight Nights, NYRR NYC Marathons, half marathons, 5k races, Tough Mudder events, and Ironman competitions. When not caring for patients or staying active through exhibition sports medicine coverage, Dr. Hussain enjoys traveling, team sports including football and soccer, running, and combat sports. He also plays bass and electric guitar.
